New Shuttle Replica Proposed In Cape Canaveral
CAPE CANAVERAL — City leaders in Cape Canaveral discussed the idea of building a new replica of the space shuttle to stand as the city’s iconic structure, comparable to the Statue of Liberty in New York, and the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Before the previous replica was destroyed six years ago by vandals, it was a common feature in city photos and town brochures.
The model shuttle was built by local firemen and donated to the city.
The new shuttle would be 15 feet long and professionally built.
Estimates for the shuttle have reportedly ranged from $6,000 to $90,000.
Cape Canaveral residents News 13 spoke with said it would be money well spent.
“I think it’s a great idea,” said Raymond Borg, a Cape Canaveral resident. ”It’s part of the heritage. This is where the shuttle comes off of, and people look for things like that.”
One resident even suggested seeing if the firemen who built the original shuttle replica would be willing to build another.
